About the Exhibition

Thangka Paintings by: Pasang Lama (Sakya Monk) and recipient of the Australian Himalayan Foundation Art Award, Tashi Gurung, Pema Angyal Gurung, Dawa Lama, Angyal Gurung and Jamyiang Lama. All the artists are currently working on the Thubchen wall painting project (through the Lo Cultural Heritage Consevation Committee). The Artists are studying under the tutelage of Master Thangka Painter, Mukti Singh Thapa.

Photographs by: Luigi Fieni (Italian art restroration expert and photographer) and Kyentse Gurung (Sakya Monk) from Choedde Gonpa in Lo Manthang.

Sand Mandala: (first week only) will be constructed by monks from the Tsechhen Shedrub Ling Mon Gon Lobdra (Great Compassion Sakyapa Monastic School, Lo Manthang) a monastic school attached to Choedde Gonpa. The construction of the mandala will commence on the day of the opening. The room will be purified by prayer in the morning after which the monks will start 'drawing' the outline of the grid later in the day. The destruction ceremony (which is, visually and spiritually, the highlight of the process) will be one week later.

Masked Dance Performance will be held on the opening night, and is being performed by monks from this school. This dance is held at the annual Tiji Festival in Mustang.
