ME AND THE OTHER
मे एंड द ओथेर
A theatrical journey to ourselves (Nepali & English)
‘She could neither move forward nor backward, she could merely choose between the water and the overpowering willows.’ - Malina
How we define ourselves is undoubtedly determined by cultural and gender-based restrictions, religion, caste and ethnicity. As a starting point, we might ask ourselves: Who are we? How do we define ourselves? What are the specific roles we take over, every day? Is there a way out of our social determination and personal limitations? And, most importantly: How can we defend our personal space?
Young performers from Kathmandu have been investigating their self concept and perception of their cultural manifestations and reflected their roles in society. Via movements and voice they found their unique way of expressing their own believes and desires - in relation to the opposite, the OTHER.
... Identity is a process, identity is split. Identity is not a fixed point but an ambivalent point. Identity is also the relationship of the OTHER to ONESELF.
The contemporary performance Me and the other focuses on how our cultural heritage, gender, languages, beliefs, and family connections influence our self-perceptions and our perceptions of the others – perceptions that may often lead to strong judgements, discrimination or even violence. This show combines physical theatre, classic and contemporary music and dance, integrating works by Franz Kafka, Ingeborg Bachmann, Christa Wolf, Sarah Kane and Lewis Carroll.
Me and the Other is an unwritten stage-statement, performed by and for women. A poetic, unveiled projection in the present moment.
