Uncovering Opportunities: Mondays with Young Entrepreneurs II

Are you an aspiring entrepreneur or a company founder? Or are you someone who simply feels there are no opportunities in Nepal and you have to go abroad to succeed? This is the event for you. You will hear success stories from youths like you who had the courage and tenacity to step out on their own navigating the rough waters of the unknown to establish successful companies in Nepal. Learn about the entrepreneurial challenges, surprises, disappointments, victories and triumph. What they have experienced may inspire you or help you avoid a pitfall or two, and accelerate your own company's progress.

Q & A session follows a short video story of entrepreneurs. In this first event in a series of five, the event would showcase Rekha Sunwar, a Dhaka entrepreneur, Mala Thapa Magar of Himalyan Allo and co-founders of Praramva Bio Tech .

ENTREPRENUERS

Dhaka – RekhaSunuar

In a patriarchal society like ours where husbands are seen both as breadwinners and decision makers, what RekhaSunar has managed to accomplish is commendable. Despite her husband forbidding her to take dhaka weaving lessons and later, even threatened to divorce her if she dared to continue,Rekha persevered. She established her enterprise with Rs 3,500 most of which was dakchina she had accumulated the previous Dashain. Now she saves up Rs. 15,000 and has even managed to purchase land in Kathmandu but her biggest victory in her life is that the same person who threatened to leave her because of Dhaka, her husband, is willing to invest in her business.

Himalayan AlloUdyog – Mala ThapaMagar

Mala ThapaMagarruns an allo(nettle-fiber) industry based in Budanilkantha, Kathmandu. Her industry, which processes allo brought from Bajhang, Bajura and Dang, employs more than a dozen people. And the finished product—fabrics and threads—is demanded by both domestic and international buyers. A humanities graduate, Mala, did not resort to opportunities abroad like most of her friends. Instead she invested about Rs 100,000 and started an enterprise that would go on to be worth more than five million rupees in three years.

Praramva Biotech

In a time where the youths are busy deciding which country they should choose to continue their higher education or which is more suitable to work, we came across these four BioTech Engineering graduates who were choosing which sector in Nepal they should try their luck in. They explored various opportunities and finally settled on manufacturing vermicompost for organic farming. Hence began the journey of Manish, Baidhyanath, Ashok and Prabesh and their new venture PrarambhaBioTechPvt Ltd. They started by producing 300 kgs and now produce over 40 tonnes per cycle. They took the risk and proved that the notion that there are no opportunities in Nepal is not accurate.
