The Life-The Work- The Times of Ar. Robert Weise

Welcome to our next CONSTRUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS with BLUE COFFEE!!

Ar. Robert Weise (1929 -1996) came to Nepal in 1957 on a two year assignment with the Swiss assistance (SATA) for the Ministry of Agriculture. Starting with humble designs of cheese factories, godowns and staff quarters, he progressed to various private projects which included designs for the royal family as well the Master Plan of the Tribhuvan University Complex, the design of its Library Building and Science Block. Some other notable works among the many completed designs are the Hotel Annapurna, Fishtail Lodge in Pokhara, Hotel Malla, Army Headquarters, SOS Children’s Village in Sano-Thimi, Japanese Embassy Staff Quarters in Jawalakhel, Soviet Embassy, besides a number of residential buildings.

In this special episode of ‘Constructive Conversations with Blue Coffee’, Kai Weise, Robert’s son and a well known architect in his own account, takes us down memory lane and explains how Robert’s designs attempted to bridge the then modern style of architecture to the context of the Kathmandu Valley.

Ar. Kai Weise is a Nepali national of Swiss origin. He completed his Masters in Architecture from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich in 1992 and has been working as a Planner and Architect in the Himalayan Region. He worked on the municipal planning of Madyapur Thimi from 1997 to 2005. Kai Weise has been working in various capacities as a UNESCO consultant and advisor to the UNESCO office in Kathmandu since 2004. He has been involved in preparing Management Plans for various World Heritage properties: Kathmandu Valley, Lumbini, Samarkand and the Mountain Railways of India (India) and recently on Bagan (Myanmar).
