ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION : The Perception of Women in Nepalese Society

Thursday 2 June – 5:30 PM at Alliance Française Kathmandu

Free entry

In many aspects of Nepalese culture women are revered. As the givers and supporters of life they are often personified as Mother Nature. In religion they are equated to Goddesses and every year millions of Hindus pay homage to Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth and beauty. Half of Nepal’s population is made up of women, and in keeping with democratic ideals, many women occupy positions of power. Currently women occupy the posts of President, Chief of the Supreme Court and Chief of Parliament.

Despite this apparent affording of equal rights, the reality for most women in Nepal is decidedly different.

Many women in Nepal face barriers to employment, as well as having to follow strict conventions regarding

dress and behaviour in society.

Join us for an interactive discussion on equality between men and women in Nepal. We will discuss to what extent Nepal is a patriarchal society and discuss how women are seen in Nepalese society.
