Restoring Bandipur: Preserving Architectural Heritage through Tourism
Bandipur prospered in the early 20th century as a trading post on the India and Tibet trade route. Although the early settlers in Bandipur were Magars and Bahuns, the Newars from Bhaktapur brought in masons, carpenters and craftsmen from their hometown to construct the beautiful houses that line the main bazaar today and give the town a distinct character. However, strong ties of the locals preserved the architectural heritage, which is being restored and promoted through a new industry – tourism. Today, Bandipur is a popular tourist destination and prospering again; the architectural heritage from its glory days is the main attraction of this hilltop town.
